We all know the importance of PST files in MS Outlook messaging system. They are the database of all your data in Outlook. These files are quite prone to corruption due to various reasons and file corruption can cost you heavily in business. Therefore, care must be taken to prevent PST file corruption in the first hand. Here are a few ways to keep your PST files safe and working:

1.Keep your PST file in an adequate size: It is highly advised to limit your PST file within 10GB irrespective of Outlook version, even though Outlook 2003/2007 supports PST files as large as 20GB and Outlook 2010 now supports up to 50GB. This is recommended to keep your PST files in optimum conditions as large PST files can be very slow and prone towards getting corrupted.

2.Outlook 2002 and earlier version PST files should not be allowed to approach 2GB: Earlier versions limit the size of Personal Folders (PST) file to 2GB. Whenever the PST file size approaches 2GB, you face various productivity issues and the PST file is likely to get corrupted. Therefore, limiting your old-format PST file up to 1.5GB is a safe practice.

3.Avoid storing PST files on a network drive or server: PST files are ought to be stored in local systems. Never store them on any remote drive or server since the network environment cannot support dense access of the PST file and will result in PST file corruption frequently.

4.Avoid working with huge volume of emails at a time: Optimum usage keeps every program up and running rather than pushing them to their threshold limits. An experiential limit of Outlook is 10,000 emails. But if you operate huge number of emails at a time, MS Outlook gets dead-locked and this condition makes Outlook unresponsive. You will have to shut-down Outlook abnormally which most probably lead to PST file corruption. Therefore, if you have more than 10,000 emails, operate them in batches. Instead select, move, copy, or delete at the most 1,000 emails at a time.

5.Never exit Outlook or shut down computer while it is still running: If Outlook gets terminated abnormally when processes are still being executed, then the PST file being accessed by Outlook at that time has maximum chances of getting corrupted.

6.Frequently backup your PST files: Backup is the best proactive way to combat data loss and corruption cases. It is a much required process to backup your PST files periodically. If you have recent backups, they can prove handy when corruption strikes and you can recover almost every data without any trouble.

In case, your PST files get corrupted, there are a few ways to repair and fix it. The basic approach is to use the Inbox Repair Tool to look for errors and repair them. It can easily repair minor errors and corruption but repair chances of severely damaged files are dodgy. You can use a third party software program to repair Outlook PST files in such cases.

Try Repair MS Outlook to experience excellent repair features. It is a spectacular tool with all inclusive repair features. It helps you restore formatting from RTF and HTML messages. Use it to repair Outlook PST files made with Outlook 2010, 2007, 2003, 2002(XP), 2000 and 97 versions. A free evaluation version is available which works on your corrupt PST file and displays all the recoverable items.

Nowadays, number of people using Outlook is gradually increasing but, very few of us know about the file system and storage of MS Outlook. Most people never bother to know about PST files until they face problems with accessing their emails in Outlook. Outlook uses Personal Storage Table or PST for storing all the email messages and other data given by the users. The PST file contains all your important data in the form of emails, your address book contacts, events on your calendar, personal folders and others.

The corruption in PST files causes inaccessibility in the stored data of Outlook which further leads to crucial data loss. All important email messaging system get halted affecting the whole communication. Several factors are responsible for corruption in PST file. Some of them are listed below:

Your computer suddenly loses power

Your computer gets shut down improperly

A bug in outlook causes it to crash

An outlook upgrade hangs up

An operating system patch fails to install correctly

A bug in some other application corrupts the file

Outlook was backed up to faulty backup media

Microsoft offers an inbuilt repair Outlook PST tool in order to resolve the corruption issues and retrieve the data. This default tool is known as Inbox Repair Tool or Scanpst.exe tool which repairs corrupted PST files and recovers the data. But this tool becomes successful only when the corruption issue is minor. For bigger cases of corruption, you have to get into some commercial tools available in the market.

Repair Outlook PST gives a professional approach of recovering deleted emails, contacts, calendar items, notes and email attachments with minimal time and effort. This is a feature rich tool that is capable of recovering password protected PST files as well as the file which have crossed 2GB size limitation.

MS Outlook uses a concept of PST or Personal Storage Table to store emails, contacts, address book, notes and calendars. This PST file is loaded each time when MS Outlook starts. Even if you delete any email or lose any contact, you still find them in the personal folder. But, sometimes, situation comes to you when this PST file gets corrupted or damaged by some means. By the corruption in PST file indicates loss of data which further creates obstruction in accessing Outlook properly. There are several reasons which may be responsible for corrupting PST file.

Some of the reasons behind PST corruption are: -

1. PST file size increases 2 GB limit (Outlook 2002 or Earlier Versions)
2. File header corruption due to unexpected shut down, power failure and virus infection
3. Corruption due to sharing of files over network
4. Interruption during PST compaction process

When the above issues encounter, some error messages prompt on the screen indicating the presence of data corruption in the PST files. You may face the following error messages while opening Outlook if the PST file gets corrupted:

Cannot find.pst file

Error has been detected in the.pst file

.pst is not a personal file folder

File path could not be accessed.

.pst cannot be accessed – 0×80040600 or Unknown errors.

An unknown error has occurred 0×80040118.

These error messages when appear on screen indicate the corruption in the PST file and inaccessibility of MS Outlook. To revive the working of MS Outlook, one needs to repair Outlook PST files. In order to repair the file, there are some manual methods which can repair the corrupted PST file up to some extent.
1.Recovers emails along with attachments, images, tasks, notes, journals and all other related components.
2.Repairs password protected/highly-encrypted PST files.
3.Recovers even deleted mails and select requires ones
4.Resolves 2GB limitation error and restore emails even from broken PST files.
5.Enables saving of recovered data in .PST, .EML, .DBX and .MSG format.

Choosing the product with best features and enhanced performance is always recommended. Outlook PST Repair is such a product by Nucleus technologies.

Outlook PST (personal storage table) files are the local file systems used in MS Outlook email client in which all the messages and items of user accounts are stored. These PST files are saved in the local hard disk and used when emails and mailbox items are to be accessed from the local server. The default location of Outlook PST files can be found in the path: C:\Documents and Settings\User_id\Local Settings\application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.pst. Every system running on MS Outlook email client consist of a PST file also known as the Personal File Folder, wherein emails, contacts, notes, drafts, appointment schedules, address books, tasks and other mailbox items are stored. Therefore, when problems crop up while accessing the mailboxes, users are required to repair Outlook PST files and resolve the issues.

PST files can get hampered because of different reasons resulting in their corruption or partial damage. Factors such as PST header corruption, PST files crossing their size limit, media corruption, failure of device drive, network problems, force quitting of MS Outlook, virus attacks, power surges and OS malfunction lead to severe damage of PST files. In order to repair Outlook PST files and access user mailboxes, it is important to use reliable and efficient tools. While Microsoft offers some free utilities such as the Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) and 2 GB Truncation Tool (Pst2gb.exe), these are not effective in resolving all types of corruption issues in Outlook PST files. With their own set of limitations, these utilities are only capable of fixing PST header corruption error and the 2 GB size limitation error.

Therefore, to successfully repair Outlook PST files, third party tools like Outlook PST Repair must be employed. With the help of such tool, it becomes easy to resolve major PST errors like “The file xxxx.PST cannot be accessed (0×80040116)”, “Errors detected in the file xxxx.PST. Quit all mail-enabled applications and run Inbox Repair Tool”, “The file could not be added to the folder/ action could not be completed” and “The file xxxx.PST has reached its maximum size”. With the help of repair Outlook PST tools, users can repair severely corrupt PST files and recover their contained data. Thorough scanning of the damaged file ensures that every single email and mailbox item is retrieved without compromising on their data integrity. Using such tool makes it easier for Outlook users to preview the recovered mailbox items and save them in desired hard drive location.

Outlook PST files have defined limit set for their size. On reaching PST maximum size, users tend to get errors and often end up with corrupt PST files in their hands. We know that MS Outlook uses PST (Personal Folder) files to store emails, contacts, calendar data and more. However, with different Outlook versions, the maximum size limit of PST varies. For that reason, we can say that there are particularly two kinds of PST files till now. Have a look:

Outlook 2003 and later use a PST file format capable of storing Unicode data (a standard that can represent most alphabets on computers) that has a practical PST maximum size limit of 20 GB.

Outlook versions prior to Outlook 2003, i.e. Outlook versions 97 to 2002 use a PST file format restricted to U.S. English, which is popularly known as ANSI format. This format restricted the PST maximum size limit to 2 GB.

Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File (PST)

Used by: Outlook 97, Outlook 98, Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002; IMAP and Windows Live Hotmail accounts in Outlook 2003; Outlook 2007 if explicitly chosen.

Size limit: 2 GB and cannot be increased.

Outlook 2003-2007 Personal Folders File (PST)

Used by: Outlook 2003 (with the exceptions above) and Outlook 2007.

Size limit: Configurable; 20 GB by default. However, for performance and stability reasons, it is not recommended to increase the limit beyond 20 GB.

It’s evident that if you are using Outlook 2002 and previous versions, there erupts the problem of crossing of 2 GB file size limitation.
